Happy Birthday Chuck Close!

Dear Chuck Close,

I’m writing you this letter in present day because you are one of the few great artists who is still alive. I know am a little late on your 75Th birthday so I will just go ahead, and make this an early present for your 76TH. I find it absolutely astonishing that your main line of work is large portraits of people, but you are a quadriplegic who has a rare disease that causes yourself not to recognize faces. This makes everything you do that much more amazing because of how many different obstacles you have overcome to be so successful in your line of work.
My first gift to you is a little bit more of a science fiction idea, but because you are still alive, and technology is rapidly growing it is not completely out of the realm of possibilities. I will give you a completely new robot body so you can still have all your wonderful ideas without the obstacles of painting with your current body. This body will be much larger than any human body, so that you can have a much easier time painting your massive portraits. It will be fully functional so you can actually grip a paintbrush, and be coated in a clear protective coating that is paint resistant, so you don’t have to worry about spilling paint because it will not stick.
My second gift is a more rational one in the sense that it can actually be achieved in today’s world. My second gift is a school designed, and modeled after your life struggles. In many of the videos, and interviews I have watched about you, you always say how important kids having role models in life is. This is why creating a school in your honor will help many kids have inspiration in life. It really touched me when you told the story about how in 8th grade your teachers told you to give up hope in learning math, science, and many other things because of your learning disabilities, and just to go straight to trade school. This is why the school will have a full acceptance rate of kids with disabilities, so no kid has to go through what you did in the eighth grade. I know that this is not a gift mainly for you, but with all that I know of you this gift idea of having a school named, and designed in your honor will mean more than any material object I could ever think of.

  1. A very thoughtful and kind blog about Chuck Close, who also seems to be a compassionate person. Would Chuck be as creative had he not been disabled, or as compassionate if he had not been told to give up learning in 8th grade? We may never know the answer, but it is so inspiring to learn about those who succeed despite great disability.

  2. It’s definitely amazing that he could accomplish what he did while having that disability. Plus it’s cool to see a blog about someone still alive.

  3. Interesting to see he had such a disability. Seeing his artwork i would never have guessed! He is truly a phenomenal painter regardless of his physical limitations. We arent far from a robot body so hopefully he will live to see that!

  4. Great blog, cant belive how their teachers told him that he had to give up in some of his courses and now he is famous, thing that for most of the people make them fight! It also good that he liked to help kids..loved your second gift! Your first one was pretty funny too!

  5. This artist really touched my heart. The fact that he is such an incredible artist and overcomes his disability is wonderful. I do a lot of work with kids that have special needs so I know the kinds of struggles that they go through. The gift of the robot was an excellent idea. He would be very happy with your gift of the school for the kids with disabilities. That’s awful that the teacher told him to give up on his dream. You shouldn’t ever let anything get in your way of achieving your goals. Nice Job on the blog. I wonder if he ever will actually build a school for kids?
